The Rewire Musical Memories Choir is an inclusive, therapeutic choir
designed specifically for people living with a diagnosis of dementia and
the family members or friends who support them. There are many
physical, mental and emotional benefits to group singing.
The choir began as part of a research project led by researchers from the
University of Melbourne and Austin Health. There are now two choirs,
Ivanhoe and Nillumbik, which continue to run with support from Rewire,
Austin Health, and Nillumbik Shire.
For Nillumbik Shire, the choir has been running since 2021, beginning as
a student pilot project online during lockdown. Now, participants are
meeting each week to share their favourite songs, sing together as a
group, and connect in a fun and stimulating environment. As well as
singing together each week, the choir has performed in the Eltham Town Square as part of the
International Day of People with Disabilities,
showing off their talents for people in the Nillumbik community. With more
performances to come and new members joining each week, the choir is
sure to continue to be a place that supports people to share their story
through song and connect with others who also have a love of music.
The aims of the choir are-
- To provide an enjoyable and meaningful activity for people with
dementia and their supporters
- To provide opportunities for social support
- To provide cognitive stimulation through singing.
The choir in Nillumbik- Singing (60-90 mins) is followed by afternoon
tea.
Fridays 1-3pm Hurstbridge Community Hub, 50 Graysharps Rd
As the choir does not have formal support staff, participants who may
need support to attend are encouraged to come along with a family
member, friend, or supporter.
